THE HONOR YOGA Story
Rooted in mindfulness, inclusivity, & deep respect for the ancient wisdom of yoga

Honor Yoga began with a simple but powerful belief: yoga has the ability to change lives and it should be accessible to everyone.
Founded in 2013 by Maria Assunta Parrella, Honor Yoga was created as a path for bringing authentic yoga into communities in a way that felt welcoming, grounded, and deeply human. More than a studio concept, it was envisioned as a community of practitioners, teachers, and leaders united by a shared commitment to healing, growth, and meaningful connection.
Drawing from decades of experience in entrepreneurship, yoga education, and conscious leadership, Maria set out to create a model that could support not only students, but the people called to teach, lead, and steward the practice within their own communities.
What began as a single vision grew into the largest yoga franchise in the United States, with more than 48 studios sold across 10 states. Yet Honor Yoga’s story has never been defined solely by growth. Its impact lives in the communities created, the teachers empowered, and the countless individuals whose lives have been touched through the practice.
Today, Honor Yoga studios are independently owned and operated by trained yoga professionals and values aligned entrepreneurs. Studio leaders come from diverse backgrounds including educators, healthcare professionals, corporate leaders, small business owners, and lifelong practitioners united by a shared commitment to authentic yoga, conscious leadership, and service.
Each studio reflects the unique leadership, personality, and community of its owner while remaining connected through shared standards, mentorship, and purpose.
Honor Yoga Pennington offers a living example of this philosophy in action. Co owned and led by Julie Mellk, the studio operates through a highly collaborative, community centered model that emphasizes shared contribution, meaningful participation, and alignment between individual growth and collective success. Team members participate in the studio’s success through a shared prosperity approach designed to foster ownership, accountability, and long term community stewardship.
Julie also serves as Head of Licensing and mentor to Honor Yoga studio operators nationwide. Through hands on guidance, operational support, and values aligned leadership, she supports current and future studio owners in building sustainable, community centered yoga businesses rooted in authentic practice and purposeful leadership.
As Honor Yoga evolved, so did its stewardship.
In 2023, Maria donated the brand’s assets to the Honor Yoga Foundation, creating a nonprofit led structure designed to align more fully with the deeper principles of yoga including accessibility, service, ethical leadership, and collective wellbeing.
Today, the studio network and Foundation work in partnership to support yoga studios, teachers, outreach initiatives, and programs dedicated to reducing suffering and expanding access to healing practices.
Honor Yoga continues to evolve not simply as a network of studios, but as a living movement devoted to healing, connection, and meaningful impact.

The Honoured People Behind the Honor Yoga

Our Story

The vision was born from the heart of Maria Assunta Parrella, a longtime entrepreneur, yoga educator, and spiritual leader who had spent decades bridging wellness, conscious business, and service.
With a desire to create one of the most supportive systems for yoga professionals—one rooted in compassion, accessibility, and authenticity—Maria laid the foundation for what would become one of the nation’s most values-driven yoga communities.
Rooted in mindfulness, inclusivity, and a deep respect for the ancient wisdom of yoga, Honor Yoga expanded to over 48 studios sold across 10 states by 2020. Many locations opened just before the COVID-19 pandemic, a time that tested every studio’s strength and spirit. While the challenges were immense, they revealed something even stronger—the unwavering heart of the Honor Yoga community.
Those who remained—dedicated yogis, studio owners, and teachers—carried the torch forward, not just preserving the brand, but evolving it. They became the true stewards of our mission: to support humanity through the practice of yoga.
In 2023, Maria donated the brand's assets to the Honor Yoga Foundation, a nonprofit committed to realigning yoga studio ownership with the deeper principles of yoga itself. This marked a meaningful shift from franchise to foundation, ensuring that future Honor Yoga studios would be rooted in purpose rather than profit.
Today, Honor Yoga studios are licensed through the Foundation and led by practicing yogis with formal training, a commitment to personal growth, and the capacity to hold space for their communities. These studio owners embody the original vision—creating inclusive, neutral spaces where all are welcome, and the heart of yoga can truly thrive.
If you're inspired to open your own studio or contribute to the Honor Yoga Foundation’s mission, we’d love to hear from you.
